At the same time, all countries in Europe, Latin America and Asia apply weight and dimension limits, which may vary depending on the route. Therefore, cargo transportation must be planned in advance.

What Is Oversized Cargo and Why Does It Require Special Transportation?

Oversized cargo, or indivisible cargo under Spanish legislation, is cargo that cannot be divided into parts for transportation and exceeds standard weight or dimension limits. Its transportation requires the involvement of companies specializing in special transport. These companies have the expertise to select the appropriate mode of transport and prepare routes, helping to reduce the risk of incidents during transit and ensure the safety of all road users. 

What Is Considered Oversized Cargo—Dimensions, Weight, and Regulations

In the European Union, the rules for special road transport are governed by Directive 96/53/EC. If a cargo exceeds the limits established by this directive, its transportation falls under the category of special transport: it requires a specific permit and the involvement of companies specializing in special transport. 

Differences Between Special Transportation, Heavy Haul, and Oversized Transportation

Any transport operation that exceeds the legally established limits for weight, dimensions, or both is classified as special cargo transport. Special cargo transportation is divided into several categories depending on the type of cargo and the nature of the excess over the permitted limits.

Heavy cargo transport refers to shipments that exceed the maximum authorized weight limits, regardless of the cargo dimensions. Oversized transport, on the other hand, exceeds the established limits for height, length, or width, regardless of the cargo weight.

What types of oversized cargo exist and in which industries are they used

In logistics, oversized cargo is usually classified according to the type of excess over the established limits: length, width, height, weight, or a combination of several parameters. However, these are not the only factors taken into account. For example, the cargo’s industry of origin also plays an important role, as transporting a wind turbine blade is significantly different from transporting a conveyor.

This classification helps determine the actual requirements of each transport operation. Based on this, the appropriate vehicle, route, required permits, and special measures for safe transportation can be selected before the shipment begins.

Extra-long cargo

Extra-long cargo is cargo whose length exceeds the standard permitted parameters for regular transport. However, the main challenge is not only the length of the cargo, but also the turning radius on curved sections, roundabouts, industrial access roads and urban routes.

So, what type of special transport should be used? We recommend modular platforms or vehicles with steering axles.

Extra-wide and extra-tall cargo

Extra-wide cargo is usually cargo whose width exceeds 2.55 m. This type of cargo is often transported as part of special transport services for agricultural machinery, industrial modules, metal structures, and equipment for the construction and mining industries.

If the height of the cargo exceeds 4.00 m, it is classified as extra-high cargo. This category includes reactors, silos, vertical tanks, and industrial columns. The main risks for trucks and other special transport vehicles are bridges, tunnels, overhead lines, gantries, road signs, and access routes to the final destination.

Extra-heavy cargo

Heavy cargo does not meet the standard weight limits established for a regular vehicle. Its transportation requires special road transport or multimodal transport. The main challenge is not the cargo volume, but the distribution of its weight and the ability of roads and bridges to withstand the corresponding load. 

How oversized cargo is transported — modes and vehicles

The choice of transport for oversized cargo does not depend solely on its dimensions or weight. Factors such as the final destination and unloading conditions are just as important as the cargo’s own weight. The most suitable solution is selected after all these parameters have been assessed 

Special road transport

Transporting indivisible cargo by road is the optimal option for short routes. Specialized trucks, low-bed trailers or self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs) are usually used for this purpose.

For international shipments, the route and axle load are checked before special road transport begins. A common mistake is to calculate only the total weight without taking the axle load into account, although this is the parameter that determines which bridges the vehicle can cross. Maritime transport of oversized cargo

When cargo needs to be transported between continents, or when road transport is not feasible for the entire route, we recommend using maritime transport for oversized cargo. This type of transport is often used to move industrial equipment, metal structures, or transformers. The maritime section of the route is usually complemented by special road transport services for cargo pickup at the point of origin and final delivery to the destination.

Multimodal transport for oversized cargo — when and why to combine modes

Multimodal transport refers to an operation carried out under a single contract, under the responsibility of one multimodal transport operator (MTO), and involving several modes of transport. What permits and authorizations are required for transporting oversized cargo

Transporting oversized cargo by special transport requires advance planning, including obtaining transit permits and special transport authorizations. Transit permits are issued based on two criteria: the country of transit and the type of excess over the established regulatory limits. 

Authorizations in the European Union

For example, to transit through Poland with cargo that is 50 m long, a Category V special transport permit issued by Poland’s General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA) is required. Its cost is approximately EUR 142. In Chile, this type of permit is issued by the Roads Directorate of the Ministry of Public Works (MOP). In addition, a route study and compliance with specific transport time windows may be required. There is no single permit for international special transport. Each European country through which the transit route passes may require a separate permit.

Requirements for international special transport

In Spain, the requirements for special road transport are established by the General Vehicle Regulations, in particular Annex IX, as well as by the complementary circulation authorizations issued by Spain’s Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT). If the cargo is subsequently transported by sea, the Maritime Navigation Act and the Law on State Ports and the Merchant Marine also apply.
