Cost of transporting a container from China to Spain: key factors
A base 20-foot freight rate costs $3,050, but this is only the starting point. The container cost is also affected by the Incoterm, customs clearance expenses, and the inland transport leg, which can add between 30% and 50% to the initial amount. Below, we answer directly the question of how much it really costs to bring a container from China to Spain.
Factors affecting shipping costs from China to Spain
The final price of a container shipped from China to Spain is influenced by more than 7 different factors. One of them is freight rates, which are updated every Friday. Monitoring these rates helps explain why the freight quote you receive today may differ from the one provided last week.
Container type and load option: 20’, 40’, FCL, or LCL
How do you choose the right container type when importing from China to Spain to avoid overpaying? It all depends on your cargo. LCL is a shared container service, ideal for smaller shipments or for testing new suppliers. In contrast, FCL is a full container load, where the cargo is not shared with other importers. It is the optimal choice from around 15 m³, as it reduces the cost per unit and avoids dependence on the consolidation timelines of other shipments.
| Product types by cargo mode and freight type | ||
|---|---|---|
| Approximate volume | Mode to choose | Examples of typical products |
| Up to 20-30 kg | Courier service | Samples, urgent parts. |
| 200 kg-5 m³ | LCL | Clothing and footwear in small quantities, costume jewellery. |
| 5-15 m³ | LCL or FCL | Small furniture, bicycles, microwaves. |
| 15-33 m³ | FCL freight, 20-foot container | Non-voluminous but heavy products: tiles, machinery, construction materials. |
| 33-67 m³ | FCL freight, 40-foot container | Voluminous and/or lightweight goods: furniture, textiles, plastic products. |
Port of origin and port of destination
The port of departure for shipping goods to Spain is determined by the exporter and is usually the one closest to the factory or warehouse. Therefore, the arrival port is assigned by default. However, Synex Logistics’ freight forwarder can negotiate an alternative port if better routes, prices, or transit times are available. Spain offers several options.
The Port of Valencia is the most connected to Asia, with almost a dozen regular shipping lines. In 2025, total China–Valencia traffic reached 622,313 TEUs and more than 6.6 million tonnes. Valenciaport is ideal if your destination is central or eastern Spain. However, Synex manager Remekh Oleh points out:
“Entering through Valencia and transporting the cargo by road to Bilbao may be more expensive than entering directly through Bilbao, even if the initial sea freight rate to Valencia was lower.”
The Port of Bilbao has the fewest connections with Asia, but it is the best gateway to northern Spain. The Port of Algeciras has a strategic location in the Strait of Gibraltar. It is a good option for cargo that will continue to other ports or for destinations in southern Spain. The Port of Barcelona also has strong connections with the Asian market and, as an additional advantage, offers rail connections with the rest of Europe.
Sea freight, rail freight, and inland transport
The main advantage of choosing sea freight from China to Spain is that it operates through weekly rotating services, direct routes, and capacity for cargo loads of up to 40’. The vessel usually returns to the port every 7 days. These rotations may vary depending on the season, demand, or geopolitical situation. Therefore, it is always advisable to confirm the actual sailing dates before each shipment.
The only drawback of sea freight from China to Spain is the inland transport leg. You need to plan in advance the pickup schedule, suitable transport, loading process, and route to the final destination.
China–Spain air freight is not designed for large cargo volumes; rather, it is primarily an urgent transport option. It is chosen when urgent stock replenishment is required and cost becomes a secondary factor compared with delivery speed. The goods are transported as palletized cargo or in ULDs.
Transporting goods by rail from China to Spain is also possible, but it is a more challenging option due to the current geopolitical situation. The existing route runs through Kazakhstan → the Caucasus → Turkey. The final Turkey–Spain connection is still not a direct route. As a result, choosing rail freight from China to Madrid involves higher costs and longer transit times.
Incoterms and cost allocation
Incoterms define which transport responsibilities and costs are covered by the seller and which are assumed by the buyer. There are several options:
- EXW: the buyer pays for pickup, freight, insurance, customs clearance, and final delivery.
- FOB: the seller pays until the goods are loaded onto the vessel. The buyer assumes responsibility for freight, insurance, customs clearance, and final delivery.
- CIF: the seller pays for freight and insurance up to the destination port. The buyer is responsible for unloading, customs clearance, and final inland transport.
- DAP: the seller covers almost everything up to the agreed delivery point in Spain. The buyer is only responsible for unloading and import customs clearance.
More experienced importers with higher shipment volumes often prefer FOB. Why? When importing from China to Spain, FOB provides maximum control over the most expensive part of the shipment: international freight. The importer does not manage logistics within China but can choose the shipping line and work with their own logistics provider for inland transport legs.
Seasonality, available capacity, and surcharges
Seasonality also matters. For example, before the Chinese New Year, demand increases sharply due to factory closures. This temporary shortage of containers drives freight rates higher.
In addition, understanding how much a container from China to Spain costs requires looking beyond the base rate, as the final cost also includes variable surcharges:
- BAF: for fuel costs.
- CAF: for currency fluctuations.
- EU ETS: for CO₂ emissions.
Another factor that directly affects availability and pricing is blank sailings. Shipping lines cancel departures to adjust supply to actual demand. Between weeks 39 and 43 of 2026, 77 out of 720 scheduled departures were cancelled (11%). How long does a container from China to Spain take in case of cancellations? If the shipping line “rolls” the container to a later sailing, the shipment may be delayed by 7 to 14 days for each cancellation.
Customs clearance, taxes, and additional charges
When the goods are cleared through customs, the importer pays the customs duty plus import VAT. In addition, there are costs that are often overlooked: destination THC, customs clearance, insurance, and final inland transport. These additional expenses can increase the total cost by 30–50% compared with the base freight rate. At Synex Logistics, we calculate each transport leg in advance, so you are not left struggling with unexpected costs halfway through the journey.
How much does it cost to ship a container from China to Spain?
The current rates published by the shipping line Hapag-Lloyd on 15 May 2026:
| Destination region | 20’ Dry | 40’ Dry | 40’ HC |
|---|---|---|---|
| Northern Europe (excluding the United Kingdom) | $2,300 | $3,500 | $3,500 |
| United Kingdom | $2,550 | $4,000 | $4,000 |
| Western Mediterranean (Spain, Croatia) | $3,050 | $4,500 | $4,500 |
| Turkey | $3,050 | $4,500 | $4,500 |
| Eastern Mediterranean, Egypt, Black Sea | $3,100 | $4,600 | $4,600 |
Important note: prices may vary from one shipping line to another.
To cross-check these figures, it is also worth looking at the Drewry Index. It aggregates rates from multiple shipping lines, taking cancellations and seasonality into account. As of 17 September 2026, the Drewry Index showed a rate of $4,500 per 40’ container, with a 1% increase during the week. However, the Asia–Europe route decreased by 7% during the same week, while the transpacific route increased by 6%. In other words, prices do not move as a single market trend but rather vary by individual route. That is why a specific rate can become outdated within just a few days.
However, we can still estimate the approximate base logistics cost:
| Concept | Approx. amount |
|---|---|
| 40’ ocean freight | $4,500 |
| Surcharges (BAF/CAF/EU ETS) | $110-150 |
| THC + customs clearance at destination | $150-250 |
| Inland transport leg | $300-500 |
| Total fixed base cost | ~$5,100-5,500 |
To this cost, you must add the import duty and VAT (21%), which are not fixed, as they are calculated based on the CIF value of the goods.
How long does it take to ship a container from China to Spain?
Transit time depends on whether the vessel sails directly or makes intermediate stops, as well as on the shipping line and route selected. These are the three typical timeframes:
- Direct route (Shanghai–Valencia): 28–35 days.
- With transshipment (Singapore/Dubai): 35–45 days.
- China–Europe express routes: 26 days, but 15–20% more expensive.
Where businesses commonly overpay
The most critical part of the journey when bringing a container from China is not “crossing the sea.” The additional costs appear when a container gets stuck at the port due to delays in documentation. In this case, the importer pays demurrage for each day of delay. Late return of the empty container is also subject to additional charges. None of these costs appear in the initial quotation. They are only discovered when planning is delayed or incomplete.
